Liberation Theology and British Christians – Terry Drummond & M. Pepper

May 3, 2015

Terry DrummondA Jubilee group booklet which looks at the ideas of liberation theologians and then assesses what is similar in Britain, concluding that, given the few members of the working classes attached to the church (and those that are conformist and tory) it is an S.D.P. wet liberal phenomenon e.g. the Urban Theology Unit at Sheffield. To make the church an alternative society to challenge the world betrays a triumphalist attitude and is individualist and humanist. It is, perhaps, harder to work out praxis in Britain as middle class liberals are not slum dwellers and the oppression here is more subtle and guilt often replaces and paralyses praxis. There is a need limply to listen, to be aware and to study carefully first principles.
